Background
Once a derelict municipal market, Circus Street is a new creative quarter in Brighton comprising retail, residential and workspace with a new purpose-designed home for South East Dance School.
Developed by U+I, this ambitious, community placemaking scheme exemplifies a healthy vision of city life, with culture, great public spaces and a creative atmosphere; all a ten-minute walk from Brighton station. A catalyst for further growth, Circus Street improves connectivity across the city and has become a new 24 hour destination.
Brief
To create a dynamic and engaging identity for this creative quarter, with integrated public signage across all building types and public realm.
Solution
Our wayfinding and signage strategy is designed with first-time visitors in mind, to create a coherent approach across six buildings, and express a variety of individual purposes from residential, commercial and retail to dance. A bespoke, graphic typeface referencing the historic Brighton Lanes and renowned heritage of this iconic seaside town.
We created a destination brand that was unashamedly Brighton, and which celebrates its spirit, vibrancy and colour. A simple colour palette strikingly contrasts old and new, and accentuates amber to reflect architectural colour scheme.
Clean, direct design and colour coding is used to create legible, accessible iconography, providing clarity and order across this ground breaking project.
